dc.description.notes | This article presents the findings of a US study which examined the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on women compared to the impact of experiencing both IPV and adverse life events. Adverse events were described as traumatic events unrelated to experience of IPV, such as experiences of a natural disaster, severe accident, sexual assault, torture, etc. Significant findings include that the majority of women had experienced both adverse events and IPV. More importantly, women who had experienced adverse events experienced twice as many partner physical assaults and four time as many partner sexual assaults compared to women who only experienced IPV. Additional findings address differences in experiences of trauma symptoms and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). | en |
