Cervical cancer screenings are especially important for women infected with HIV, as they are at increased risk. However, the particular circumstances of most members of this group in the United States, such as low socioeconomic status and substance abuse, render the screening unimportant. This study intends to establish the degree of adherence to colposcopy for abnormal cervical cytology and identify risk factors for non-adherence among HIV-infected and non-infected women. The findings revealed a significant inverse association between adherence and specific variables such as ever experiencing domestic violence by a partner who prevented entry into or exit from home. It is suggested that addressing substance abuse and domestic violence problems might improve adherence.en
