Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at ascertaining the relative importance of interparental violence versus friend dating violence as a predictor for dating violence perpetration and victimisation by adolescents. An overview of theoretical explanations of adolescent dating violence is also provided. The findings reveal that while both interparental violence and having friends who are perpetrators or victims of violence are associated with adolescent experiences of victimisation and perpetration, the role of friends was more significant. The study also suggests that while girls were more likely to be perpetrators of dating violence, the behaviour engaged in by girls was more moderate on average than that engaged in by boys. Strengths and limitations of the study, and some of its implications for future research and practice, are identified.en
