| dc.description.notes | This article, discussing the results of the first survey conducted in Finland to study men’s violence against women, reported that partner violence is common in Finland and is directed specifically against young women. The author argues that life situation factors viewed as making women vulnerable to spousal violence, such as having children, low education, cohabitation and financial dependency, have failed to explain partnership violence against women in Finland. The author explores the context and the generational (age) and cultural changes of violence and how the experiencing of violence influences the meanings attributed to it. It aims to find out whether young women were more sensitive or aware than older women in recognising violence and whether this could explain why they report. Women’s conversational cultures relating to embodiment and sexuality are analysed. Differences in attitudes to embodiment and sexuality are found between women of different ages. Younger women reported more easily and on less severe violence than older women. The author concludes that when studying violence against women, cultural changes as well as context, such as its seriousness, consequences and effects of its duration on the meanings attached to violence, should be examined. | en |
