Interventions designed to respond to issues of abuse generally provide intensive short-term support to solve immediate problems. However, the significant losses experienced by survivors of domestic violence and child abuse are not comprehensively addressed. Social assumptions that promote the advantages of certain events such as leaving the relationship or the healing attribute of time fail to recognise the importance of mourning. Similarly, shame inhibits grief expressions that might disclose the occurrence of abuse. Some of the losses identified are loss of: self-esteem, partner, expected future, innocence, family and community. The authors advocate for a more integrated support to deal with grief.en
