Presents the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at analysing victim interviews conducted in the course of a Florida-based Spouse Assault Replication Program arrest experiment. Interviews with victims were conducted immediately and six months after police intervention with a view to identifying patterns of violence following arrest, victim satisfaction with police and feelings of personal/legal power and safety. Concludes by advocating a focus on women’s subjective experience of violence and the need for cultural and social resources that empower women and recognise the intersection of racial, class and gender barriers.en
