Outlines the methodology and results of a US study conducted to explore and assess recent criticisms directed at child custody evaluators’ training, practices and procedures. Central to the study was an examination of the evaluators’ understanding of and approach to allegations of domestic and/or family violence. An overview of empirical research into domestic violence and legislative reforms implemented to address the issue is provided and some of the challenges associated with developing appropriate practice standards for evaluators are discussed. Concludes that allegations of poor training and education of child custody evaluators working in the area of domestic violence are not supported by the findings but that further research into and development of evaluation procedures is needed.en
