Presents the methodology and results of an Australian study investigating the relationship between family violence, marital distress and attributions made for negative behaviours by physically and non-physically violent men undergoing counselling and non-physically violent men living in the community. Aimed at determining whether the attributional determinants of marital distress developed in Fincham and Bradbury’s Entailment Model are capable of predicting family violence, the results indicate physically violent men are more likely to attribute intent to their partner’s negative behaviour and to view their partner’s behaviour as selfish, blameworthy and unchangeable. Where marital satisfaction was controlled for, however, there was little difference between the attributional patterns of violent and non-violent men. Implications of the study and directions for further research are also discussed.en
