| dc.description.notes | This article seeks to review critically the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Commonwealth) in reference to its recent examination by the Australian Law Reform Commission and proposed amendments to it by the Commonwealth Government. Delafield describes the various legislative acts which address sexual discrimination in Australia and explains the origin of the Sex Discrimination Act (SDA) itself. She looks at the limitations of the SDA which are seen in the area of employment, in its focus on the individual rather than on systemic discrimination, in its concept of equality and in its reactive stance. She examines attempts to strengthen the SDA which have come about through two reports: the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs’ ‘Halfway to Equal'; and the Australian Law Reform Commission’s ‘Equality Before the Law’. There is also a discussion of the attempt in 2000 to amend the bill in order to eliminate inconsistencies between the states and the Commonwealth in regards to access to IVF procedures. | en |
