Intimate partner violence committed by women is scarcely researched and widely misinterpreted. This US study examines differences and similarities on behavioural and psychological dimensions among battered women who abuse to provide an understanding of the complexity of the phenomenon. The women who participated in the research were engaged in one of the following types of relationships: mainly victims, mainly aggressors, mixed-male coercive and mixed-female coercive. The categories were associated with childhood abuse, coping strategies, anger expressions, motivations, physical injury, mental health symptoms and substance abuse. It is concluded that female domestic violence defendants need to be addressed as individuals, and not as a group, in the context of their male partner’s abuse against them.en
