Outlines the design and findings of a research study conducted in urban and suburban community based organisations serving women and children in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Using semi-structured focus groups, the US study aimed to identify significant barriers to detection of, and intervention in, domestic violence, from the perspective of battered women. Major factors which were seen to inhibit disclosure of abuse included fear of reprisal from a violent partner, shame, gendered perceptions of one’s role in the family, fear of police involvement and an absence of confidence in the health care system and/or provider. The cost of medical care and waiting periods were also identified as deterrents. Comments made by women suggest health care professionals have an important role to play in preventing and responding to domestic violence situations. It is concluded that increased community education and collaboration is needed if the medical system is to effectively respond to the needs of battered women.en
