dc.description.notes | This short communication describes an intervention for reducing dating violence among adolescents attending a US emergency department (ED). SafERteens was trialled on 726 patients aged 14-18 years with a history of alcohol use and violence in the previous year. This study divided participants into three groups; the intervention was delivered by computer to group one, by a therapist to group two and the control group was given a standard brochure to read.<br/ ><br/ >Self assessments were made at 3, 6, and 12 months after the ED visit. A reduction in dating violence was recorded at 3 and 6 months but not at 12 months for those participants in group one involved in moderate dating violence when compared to the control group. In cases involving severe dating violence, neither intervention produced a reduction in violence.<br/ ><br/ >Authors suggest that health care providers are uniquely placed to deliver meaningful interventions to adolescents, men and new mothers in a health care setting to reduce intimate partner violence but more needs to be done to develop and deliver effective interventions. | en |
