dc.description.notes | Article discusses ‘Building Safer Communities’, a joint project of the Western Sydney Regional Violence Prevention Specialist, the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET), The Hills Family Centre, and Castle Hill and Cumberland Women’s Health Centre, Parramatta under the auspices of the NSW Strategy to Reduce Violence Against Women. The project’s aim was to raise awareness of domestic violence-related issues of child protection among primary school students. The pilot study involved a story telling session for Year Four students at a large Western Sydney primary school in which stories such as Jack and the Bean Stalk were read by a storyteller and children encouraged to interact in the session. Lessons given by the classroom teacher both preceded and followed the story telling. Difficulties arising during the planning and implementation of the pilot are discussed, as well as lessons learned from the project. The demonstration package developed for other schools to use is described. | en |
