dc.description.notes | This review article surveys the range of research into the development of a child’s brain and the effects of ill-treatment and abuse on that development. It includes work which comes from the fields of developmental psychology and psychiatry and there is discussion of brain plasticity as it is influenced by experiences of infancy and childhood. It also examines work investigating the connection between maltreatment in childhood and dysregulation of the stress system leading to mental health issues.<br/ ><br/ >Recommendations arising from analysis of this research support views coming from a therapeutic approach and strengthen the case for supporting families at risk to prevent such damage to children. The possibility that healing and recovery of the brain is possible is explored in light of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics developed by Bruce Perry. | en |
