This US editorial explains the effects of witnessing or experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) on children, behaviourally, emotionally, psychologically and on their general health. It goes on to list the increased risks these children face, including maltreatment, violence and abuse. The authors explain that professionals from legal, mental health and education fields have become increasing aware of the harmful effects of IPV on children’s lives and recognise the necessity of reporting incidents, or suspected incidents, of IPV involving children. Asnes and Leventhal offer recommendations for more effective detection of IPV, including the wide implementation of increased psychosocial screening for IPV by health practitioners, and in particular pediatricians. The editorial concludes that identifying exposure to IPV can lead to timely intervention and improved outcomes for the children.en
