Drawing upon a range of international human rights instruments, this article provides a critique of the right of parents in the UK to physically punish their children. The law as it currently stands is explained and the various ways in which it both discriminates against children and violates international standards are highlighted. Research demonstrating the long-term negative consequences of using violence against children is reviewed and the abolition of the common law defence of 'reasonable chastisement' recommended. The article concludes by examining the political and social context within which these changes must take place and contrasting the culture of violence against women with that of violence against children.en
