| dc.description.notes | This article outlines 3 key issues arising from Briere and Jordan’s article on the complexity of mental health effects of violence against women. The first issue relates to the use of battered woman syndrome to describe women’s response to intimate partner violence. Briere and Jordan identified the limitations of the use of syndrome to discuss battered women’s response to intimate partner violence. The second issue focuses on the mental health implications of ongoing risks experienced by women living with intimate partner violence. This continuing risk, even if years after the relationship has ended, distinguishes intimate partner violence (with the exception of child maltreatment) from other forms of interpersonal violence such as stranger rape or combat.
