Discusses the methodology and results of a Canadian study aimed at ascertaining the importance of alcohol abuse as a predictor of male violence against female partners, relative to other socio-demographic variables, such as unemployment, and attitudinal factors. Provides a review of the various explanations advanced for the link between alcohol abuse and domestic violence and suggests that although there is a relationship between the two, it exists in conjunction with other factors, including unemployment and patriarchal beliefs regarding the status of women. Argues that perpetrator programmes need to direct attention to the ways in which a range of variables interact to produce violent behaviour, rather than focusing specifically on alcohol abuse as the source of the problem.en
