Notes:  From the issue "Forum: Family Violence in Indigenous Communities; Breaking the Silence?"
Addressing the incidence of violence amongst Indigenous people, the article points out the abuse and neglect that Indigenous Australians have endured, and some of the consequent outcomes. Aboriginal communities are isolated, their geographical location and the lack of appropriate programmes and protection have restricted alternatives for victims of domestic violence. The author proposes a number of measures to improve the mechanisms to deal with the complexity of inter-gender Indigenous violence. These include the involvement of the actors to achieve the solution; public awareness, and governments’ recognition of their responsibility.
