dc.description.notes | Discusses the methodology and results of a US study which examined the role of psychological, physical and sexual abuse in predicting the strategic and traumatic stress responses of women involved in the criminal justice system and/or court proceedings, to domestic violence situations. Strategic responses were defined as help-seeking or self/child protective behaviours and the failure of past research to include measures of both psychological and physical abuse when examining such responses is highlighted. Traumatic stress responses were defined as those psychological responses such as attempted suicide, and the absence of studies including measures of both physical and psychological abuse as predictors of psychological distress is again noted. The results indicate that both physical and psychological abuse patterns play an important role in women’s responses – physical abuse variables tended to play a more significant role in battered women’s use of the legal system and in choosing to leave their abusive partners, while psychological variables were stronger predictors of women’s traumatic responses. | en |
