dc.description.notes | Overview:This short paper explores the relationship between gender based violence and the spread of HIV/AIDS from a human-rights perspective.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion:This paper discusses the relationship between HIV/AIDS and violence against women, focussing specifically on the experience of African women in Africa. Based on secondary research, the author contends that women who experience violence are more likely to become HIV positive than women who are not as violence interferes with the ability of women to negotiate safe sex. Violent intimate partnerships also hinder the ability of women to seek testing, to disclose their HIV status to their partners or to adhere to medical treatment. Further, a woman who discloses or is suspected of being HIV positive may experience violence at the hands of not only partners, but family or community as well. | en |
