dc.description.notes | This US based study examines the ability of mediators to detect intimate partner violence (IPV) in divorce and separation mediation and the use of screening tools. Parents seeking separation and referred for mediation were approached about participating in the study. Mediators working with these parents conducted either the standard IPV screening or an enhanced screening process using the Relationship Behavior Rating Scale (RBRS). Results showed that, regardless of which screening procedure was used, there was no difference in mediator identification of IPV and mediators did not identify the presence of IPV in more than half the cases where parents self-reported physical IPV. The authors conclude with a discussion examining hypotheses of mediators’ failure to correctly identify physical IPV. | en |
