Presents the methodology and findings of a [US] study aimed at identifying the characteristics of people who divorce and the various ways, both adjudicative and non-adjudicative, that custody arrangements, visitation rights and child support payments are agreed to. Comparisons are drawn between couples for whom spousal and child violence was an issue and those for whom it was not, and it is noted that while approaches to divorce settlement did not vary markedly between the two groups, post-decree court involvement was much more likely for the former. Suggests that because a large proportion of cases are settled out of court, alternative modes of intervention with respect to ensuring the safety of children and the involvement of both parents in their upbringing might be needed.en
