| dc.description.notes | Describes the issues and needs of people from a non-English Speaking Background (NESB) with disability, their families and carers. People from NESB with disability miss out on receiving services because of the Anglo-Australian orientation of service provision, the lack of services that addresses cultural diversity and disability, discrimination and financial vulnerability. It has been found that women from NESB are more willing to discuss issues of violence and abuse with women of the same ethnic background. However, women's and mainstream services appear unable to accommodate linguistic and cultural diversity. Interpreters and translators have increasingly adopted the user-pays principle, which reduces the services for these women, alters the information, and provokes the intervention of family members in personal issues. Women from NESB with disability also suffer from a lack of credibility when reporting domestic violence incidents. Some strategies to assist women from NESB with disability experiencing domestic violence are suggested. | en |
