Compares the prevalence of domestic violence among general practice patients with the estimates of the general practitioners, and identifies patient attitudes toward discussion and screening in low-, middle- and high-socioeconomic areas. The sample comprised 620 female patients and 22 general practitioners of 15 general practices in northern Sydney. Nearly 19 per cent of the participants reported being victims of domestic violence, a figure that surpasses the <1 per cent account of the doctors. There was no significant difference among the three socioeconomic groups. The violence was disclosed to the practitioner in one third of the cases, and routine screening was acceptable to 38.1 pert cent of respondents. Both doctors and patients in the high socioeconomic group were reluctant to participate in discussion or routine questioning about abuse.en
