Provides an overview of research into the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence and the use of violence towards family pets as a means of coercing and/or controlling female partners. The need for recognition of the link between animal and human abuse amongst service providers in the US is highlighted and some of the implications of recent research for social work practice are suggested. A list of relevant knowledge and skills for social workers attempting to incorporate recognition of the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence into practice is presented and some specific strategies organisations might employ are described.en
