Reviews the international and Australian literature regarding the prevalence, nature and effects of domestic violence in pregnancy. Argues that inconsistencies in definitions of domestic violence across studies and between agencies make it difficult to determine prevalence and have real impacts on women’s access to services. Summarises the health implications of domestic violence and argues that the increased contact of women with health service providers during pregnancy provides an opportunity to identify women who are being victimised and to offer early intervention. Calls for a systemic and co-ordinated response to domestic violence in pregnancy within the health care system, for example through screening and training programmes.en
