dc.description.notes | Outlines the background to, methodology and results of a research project being undertaken at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, currently in its pilot phase. The project aims to determine the nature, level and extent of domestic violence against women during pregnancy in relation to their socio-economic needs and to explore women’s perceptions of appropriate professional responses to disclosure of violence within the health care setting. Highlighting the prevalence of violence against pregnant women in Australia and the absence of research in this area, dilemmas surrounding how domestic and family violence is defined and the various adverse consequences it has for women’s physical and psychological health are discussed. The results of the study are then reviewed, various barriers to disclosure of abuse identified and the relevance of these findings to the implementation of routine antenatal screening considered. | en |
