dc.description.notes | Outlines the aims, methodology, results and conclusion of an Australian study comparing the diagnoses and characteristics of self-reported domestic violence victims with a random sample of non-victim controls. The research was conducted in the Emergency Department (ED) at a major Queensland public hospital. Significant differences were found between the diagnoses and characteristics of victims and non-victims. The study showed that victims used the ED more often, that more had attempted suicide, more had psychiatric diagnoses, and more had alcohol and drug problems. As a result of this research, it was recommended that health professionals be given training on domestic violence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; that referral services to address the psychosocial aspects of domestic violence be developed within hospitals; and that longitudinal research be undertaken to investigate the nature of the identified association between domestic violence and psychiatric disorder. | en |
