dc.description.notes | This paper presents the results of a survey conducted in 2000 about Queensland Magistrates’ views on domestic violence issues and the operation of the Domestic Violence Act (1989). The findings are compared to the 1999 New South Wales Judicial Commission’s survey of magistrates. Of the 96 surveys sent, 9 female magistrates (75% of female magistrates) and 29 male magistrates (34% of male magistrates) responded. The safety of women and children was the main priority for 71 and 75 percent of Queensland and NSW magistrates, respectively. The majority of magistrates in both states agreed that sometimes, domestic violence matters are best worked out between the two parties. A large majority in both states believed that protection orders were used as a tactic in family court proceedings. Three other statements dealing with social and legal understandings of domestic violence are examined. | en |
