Reports the methodology and findings of a statewide evaluation of domestic violence services in Illinois, USA that sought to engage service providers in the research and evaluation process. The range of domestic violence services provided to battered women and some of the issues that arise in the context of evaluating advocacy, counselling, hotline and shelter programmes are discussed and it is suggested that participatory evaluation techniques can significantly improve victim safety, service provider cooperation and the capacity of researchers to obtain useful information. Some implications for policy and practice are identified.en
