In order to measure the impact of domestic violence, this US study examines the occurrence of behavioural, physical, learning or emotional problems within children referred to child protective services because of multiple types of abuse and neglect. Interviews with the primary caregiver and the children, reviews of case files and teacher reports provided the data used in this research. Participants were a subset of the LONGSCAN (Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect) sample. It was found that the health and behaviour of children up to 6 years of age who were living in unstable and occasionally violent households were defined by the relationship between their mother and themselves.en
