Presents the design, methodology and results of a New York-based study aimed at testing an ecological model of the effects of exposure to partner violence and child abuse on children’s behavioural outcomes. Outcomes were measured according to both peer rated and combined parent-teacher rated variables. A background to the various theories which have attempted to account for the direct and indirect effects of partner violence and child abuse on children’s behaviour is provided and it is argued the findings of the US study indicate support for the ecological model’s hypothesis that partner violence and caretaker distress, both a function of family stress, increase the risk of child abuse and thereby increase the risk of poor behavioural outcomes in children. It is noted however that the linear nature of the model and its inability to take account of the transactional processes occurring in family relationships limits its predictive value. Implications of the findings for intervention and prevention are then discussed.en
