dc.description.notes | General Overview: This paper reviews the literature on children exposed to domestic violence and argues that the diversity of children’s experiences requires equally diverse responses from our communities.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: Conservative estimates suggest that 10-20% of American children are exposed to adult domestic violence each year. These children are more likely to exhibit aggressive, antisocial, fearful and inhibited behaviours, show lower social competence and have poorer academic performance. They are more likely to use violence and, as adults, are more likely to report depression, trauma-related symptoms and low self-esteem. However, many children who experience domestic violence show no ill effects, perhaps because of the presence of supportive adults and organisations in the child’s life. It is likely that increased severity and frequency of violence are associated with worse outcomes for children.<br/ ><br/ >Conclusion: The author concludes that as children who are exposed to domestic violence are a varied group with varied impacts, the response should be similarly varied. They should not all be considered maltreated and referred to child protection agencies, as some will benefit more from voluntary services in the non-profit sector. Where possible, children should remain with their non-abusive parent, safety resources should be provided to adult and child and new methods for intervening with violent men should be developed. Programs within the voluntary sector should be developed and expanded. More effort should be directed at community wide prevention. | en |
