Notes:  Presents the methodology and results of a US study aimed at testing the applicability of the trans-theoretical, or stages of change, model to women trying to leave violent intimate relationships. The study identified seven processes of change used by women when ending intimate partner violence, specifically consciousness-raising, self-reevaluation, environmental reevaluation, social liberation, helping relationships, self-liberation and stimulus control. Important 'constructs' of change adopted by women as they progressed through these stages included decisional balance and self-efficacy. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are also suggested.
