Discusses recent community education campaigns which have attempted to challenge the socio-cultural beliefs and perceptions that help to shape, condone and perpetuate male violence against women. The specific strategies adopted by these campaigns are identified as the promotion of alternative gender constructions, drawing on the masculine culture to develop appropriate and meaningful messages and demonstrating how men can speak out and stand together against violence. Five key challenges that have emerged from research and practice in male violence prevention are then outlined, including the necessity of challenging the discourses of sexuality and power that underlie male violence against women, targeting violence-supportive cultures and acknowledging and addressing men’s experiences of victimisation.en
