Discusses the recent Federal Government inquiry into joint child custody arrangements and the report released by the Committee earlier this year. A summary of the DVIRC's response to the report, including its major criticisms, is then provided. The assumption, implicit in the report, that shared parenting is to be preferred is challenged and some of the recommendations made, such as the establishment of a family tribunal, are critiqued. The need for greater recognition of the difficulties victims face in substantiating allegations of violence in the Family Court and the risks associated with mediation processes is also highlighted.en
