Discusses the background to, methodology and results of a qualitative study which examined women’s perceptions and feelings in relation to the Private Family Visit Program (PFV) at Canadian federal prisons. The research aimed at ascertaining the safety level of women during conjugal visits with incarcerated partners through a series of semi-structured interviews. Major issues raised by women involved in the study included fear of abuse and control by incarcerated partners and the absence of safety mechanisms provided to women who wished to postpone or avoid conjugal visits; the hostile and degrading attitudes of correctional staff, reported to have engaged in unwarranted body searches on a number of occasions; the inconsistent implementation of policy by staff members and the cost of food during conjugal visits. Various limitations of the study are outlined and it is concluded that while the incidence of abuse during conjugal visits appears to be low, these findings may be a reflection of systemic and other factors. Recommendations for improvements to policy and practice are provided.en
