Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at exploring gay men's perceptions of the role of alcohol and other substance use in their experiences of domestic violence. A review of research into violence in gay relationships and research examining the role of alcohol and drugs as a precipitating or causal factor is presented and some of the gaps in existing knowledge are highlighted. The findings indicate that, while many perceive substance use as being causally related to violence and many believed substance abuse could result from violence, few saw any association between substance abuse and violence.en
