dc.description.notes | The Official Journal of the Research Society on Alcoholism and the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism<br/ >This article examines the prevalence of male-to-female physical violence and its consequences among women in the United States, particularly in the lives of women with alcohol and other drug problems. Diverse studies have found significant correlation between alcohol and drug consumption and the risk of violent injury and actual injury from domestic violence situations. Alcohol-related problems are considered strong predictors of intimate violence mainly within African American couples. It is argued that the seeking and the delivery of treatment might be affected by the victimisation. Physical and psychological repercussions of abuse might impede adhesion to a treatment regime. These particular circumstances need to be addressed by specialised staff usually lacking in substance abuse settings. Directions for practice, policy and research are suggested. | en |
