Explores the nature and occurrence of ‘mother abuse’, identifying potential reasons why it is more likely to occur where children have previously been exposed to and/or witnessed domestic violence. The term ‘mother abuse’ is defined and distinguished from ‘normal’ parent/child conflict, and various factors which may contribute to its likelihood are examined. The role of ‘systems abuse’ in perpetuating child-to-parent violence is raised and some strategies for women dealing with abuse from their child are suggested, including accessing support/counselling services, adolescent mediation services and legal intervention. The need for early intervention as a way of preventing the intergenerational transmission of violence is highlighted.en
