Notes: | Discusses the concept of child abuse and its various forms, and considers the manner in which the father’s role in child abuse has been constructed by researchers, courts, social services and society generally. Common stereotypes that arise in the debate of the father’s role in child abuse in the context of parental separation and divorce are examined, before recent research into residence and contact disputes in the Family Court of Australia is analysed to determine a more realistic picture. The research review suggests that, while existing stereotypes of fathers as either victims of the system or ruthless perpetrators can be accurate, they are not entirely supported by available data and further investigation into the development of individualised services that focus on the safety of children is warranted. |
