This Australian journal article explores the issue of intentional filicide committed within the context of parental separation. It highlights the highly gendered nature of the crime, where a significant proportion of perpetrators are the fathers rather than mothers. Comparisons of motivations for committing filicide are made between genders. Additionally, in many such cases, these women have previously experienced intimate partner violence at the hands of their children’s father. The article outlines the existing national and international research and knowledge about filicide in the context of parental separation and the role and extent of involvement with family law courts in such situations. The article uses illustrative case studies to demonstrate the significant impact of this issue.en
