dc.description.notes | Presents an overview of the operation of the Firearms Act 1996 and regulations made under it, following the removal of certain matters from the jurisdiction of the Local Court to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). The location and role of the firearms registry, the kinds of orders made by the AAT, the difference between mandatory and discretionary provisions under the Act and the AAT’s construction and interpretation of them are each discussed. Consideration by the Tribunal of matters involving allegations of domestic violence and the legislative criteria the Tribunal are bound to follow are examined and specific provisions relating to licensing, contravention of the Act and the public interest are explained. The potential role of operational police in providing information to the Firearms Registry is also identified. | en |
