Special Issue Title: "Intimate betrayal: Domestic violence in lesbian relationships"<br/ >A comprehensive review of the literature that addresses abuse in lesbian relationships is presented in this article. Most of the studies performed to estimate the degree of violence reveal a significant prevalence of some form of mistreatment, including physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and psychological abuse. Threats and destruction of property have also been reported. Anecdotal evidence disclosed by victims/survivors and service providers illustrates the diverse manifestations of the abuse perpetrated not only by partners but also within mainstream and alternative services. The articles that concentrate on the needs of undeserved populations are particularly scarce on issues faced by lesbians of colour and lesbians who abuse. Lack of knowledge and training was found in most of the approaches and community efforts. These findings provide a useful framework to plan effective intervention and prevention strategies. Coordinated efforts involving practitioners from various fields are suggested as the appropriate response.en
