This article discusses the issue of gender and its importance in understanding intimate partner violence through an examination of the use of and differences in cross applications by men and women in Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (protection order) proceedings in New South Wales. The researcher conducted interviews with both women involved in cross applications and various professionals working in the legal system, documentary analysis of court files and court observations. The study demonstrates the limited picture that is generated if incidents are looked at in isolation of the context of such acts of violence or abuse.en
