See also 'Holistic community justice: a proposed response to family violence in Aboriginal communities' by Rowena Lawrie and Winsome Matthews on our Research & Resources database.<br/ >This paper presents a proposal to address Aboriginal family violence in New South Wales. An overview of the current situation reveals the high rates of family violence endured by Aboriginal people and the prevailing myths influencing the criminal justice system. Racism, discrimination and cultural inappropriateness are some of the aspects that prevent mainstream government services from providing effective assistance. An approach controlled by the community that deals holistically with victims and copes with offenders through a restorative and rehabilitative perspective is proposed to tackle the issue. Central to this model are alternative sentencing measures and healing programmes to reduce family violence in the long term.en
