Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at assessing risk of intimate partner violence and related homicide amongst women seeking prenatal care. Studies addressing the links between domestic violence, pregnancy and homicide are also reviewed. Comparisons drawn between women who left their abusers prior to giving birth and those who chose to stay suggest the latter’s decision may act as a protective factor with respect to risk of homicide during pregnancy but that exposure to violence falling short of homicide is still common. The findings also indicate that pregnancy can act as a trigger for leaving an abusive relationship but that more needs to be done to protect women who adopt this difficult course.
