Provides an overview of a research project carried out by Loretta Kelly and Hayley Katzen on the police response to reported breaches of Apprehended Violence Orders in a rural area of NSW with a sizeable Indigenous population. While the report generated 80 recommendations, it is argued that its importance lies in its emphasis on hearing women’s narratives, a process which is empowering to participants. Indigenous participants were interviewed by Loretta Kelly, an Indigenous researcher experienced in domestic violence support work, who spent time ‘yarning’ with the women prior to the formal semi-structured interview. This established rapport by talking about kinship and social connections, an essential part of developing a partnership with the women who shared their stories. Locates the findings about the Indigenous women’s experiences of racism in this study with the broader history of colonisation and asserts that racism lies at the heart of the Australian legal system.en
