Qualitative US study which explores, from the perspective of domestic violence survivors, what was helpful in their contact with health service providers. Identified what is termed the 'complicated dance of disclosure' by victims and health workers; and the power of validation from a health care provider, even in the absence of a direct disclosure by the women. Identifies reason for women's decisions not to disclose violence, including the perception that domestic violence was not a medical problem, not wanting to be pushed into leaving, fear of losing their children and fears about disclosures not being kept confidential. Concludes that the complex dance of disclosure identified in this study defies any standardized or formulaic approach to screening for domestic violence in health services, and suggests that validation should be included in initial history taking/screening.en
